Not another breakout!
You’ve avoided high processed foods, cleanse your face each evening, and even use SPF moisturiser to avoid aggravating the pores from producing too much oil. But, for some reason, no matter how careful you seem to be, breakouts continue to occur.
Let’s breakdown what could be occurring within your skin that causes acne to form.
Firstly, what we encounter as “acne” are clogged up hair follicle pores, full of oil, dead skin cells, debris, and bacteria. When either of these become excessive, it can then trigger your skin to react negatively and form acne breakouts.
Excessive oil production can be caused by several factors, most within our control, but some, like our hormones, that we may not be able to manage all the time. You can read all about it in our previous article here.
If you’re not cleansing efficiently to your skin’s type and conditions, dead skin cells may build up and cause blockage within the pores. Oil can become trapped while your skin continues to produce oil, as well as trapping bacteria and other forms of debris. And if the bacteria becomes clogged for too long, it can grow and fester, causing more inflammation and cyst-like.
As you know, there is a lot of things that can trigger your skin to manifest into acne, such as genetics, hormones, stress, food, lack of exercise, and certain products and/or ingredients.
Here, at Skin Revival, we always go through a thorough consultation to assess what factors may be contributing to your acne breakouts. If we can address those, it then becomes easier for professional treatments, and correct product use in your skincare system, to have an effect in reducing your breakouts as well as the intensity of the breakouts.
Salicylic Acid (BHA) is oil-soluble. Meaning, it can move into sebum-filled pores and loosen the mix of oil and sticky dead skin cells that clog the pores. By breaking down the components within the pore, it pushes it all out and prevents re-blockage. Two products that we highly recommend are CIVONA’s Dermal Exfoliance serum & RATIONALE’s #5 The Mask.
Retinoids work powerfully within the follicle lining of the pores. They normalize keratinization (how dead skin cells form and shed) to prevent microscopic blockage before you see a pimple. They also reduce the “stickiness” of dead cells, making it more difficult for blockage to occur within the pores. Two products that we highly recommend that have Retinoids as an active ingredient are Dermaceutic Activ Retinol 0.5 and Biopelle Retriderm Serum Mild 0.5% Retinol.
Zinc Gluconate slows down the growth and reproduction of acne-associated bacteria. It’s also noted to have anti-inflammatory properties to calm the skin from irritation caused by acne bacteria. Two products that we highly recommend containing Zinc Gluconate are Propaira Purifying Cream and CIVONA’s Dermal Radical Protect serum.
Now that we have gone over how acne breakouts occur, what may be causing them, and what treatments and products can be used to address and manage your breakouts, you can confidently feel secure knowing there is a clear path to CLEAR SKIN!
And as always, we recommend coming in for a thorough skin consultation with one of highly educated skin clinicians to assess your skin to be able to educate you which treatments and products would work best for your skin.
